Portrait of Brooklyn Arts Hotel’s owner Maggie Fooke, 1990
This portrait hung in various locations at Brooklyn Arts Hotel over the years, it was painted by Katy Munson long before Maggie owned the hotel. We included this remaining painting in the Supernaculum exhibition as an ode to Maggie who generously provided the hotel space for the exhibition. Her presence was felt in the hotel as the host of Brooklyn Arts Hotel throughout her time as its owner. The portrait was placed to welcome guests as they walked up the stairs.
Katy Munson is an Adelaide-born now Melbourne based artist. Munson’s paintings can be found in the NGV and collections around Australia. She also paints Tibetan deities in the traditional manner considering the work a part of her buddhism. Munson studied painting at the old National Gallery school, where local artists Ian Armstrong and John Brack were her teachers.
